Let it Shine 03:51
There will be light Electric yellow light when you scream into the night There will be hands Children's hands On your skin To help you stand Let it shine Oh let it shine There will be sons To other ones They'll be with you from now on There will be pain Plenty of shame For your skin and for your name Let it shine Oh let it shine There will be light Inner, outer light But it won't shine Without a fight

He comes back from prison And buys some Coronas His friends all come around I am his proud son And though I'm in high school He laughs and passes one down Down the line Down the line Soon comes the morning And my old man's sleeping The schoolbus rumbles outside My head rolls like thunder Through dodgeball in PE I sweat and wonder if I'll die Beside me in math class Sits a girl with my number And asks if I heard her call I tell her to back off My old man's out of prison So forget what I whispered in the hall Maybe things will be better next time Down the line Down the line Maybe things will be better this time Down the line Down the line He's in my bed shirtless Woke up when I came in He grins and offers me a smoke I join him, I burn one And ash in a bottle I ask him why the lamp broke He talks about mama In Spanish and jailyard Some language I can't understand While I was at school She cursed him while cleaning Told him she’d need a better man Maybe things will be better next time Down the line Down the line Maybe things will be better this time Down the line Down the line "And son, let me tell you This is for the best These women, they all come and go" My father he stretches The air has been poisoned And there are a few things I know That girl, I should call her But she won't answer I know the same thing my dad knows I'll curse her, I'll stalk her I'll block her online But I’m my father’s son, so you know

Waterfall 03:58
If you want to see a waterfall If the neon's fine Straight flourescent lines If the neon's fine And you don't mind If the story's fine In your old man's lines If the story's fine Then do your time But if you wanna see a waterfall If you wanna see a waterfall If your old man drinks In his prison stink If your old man drinks Then he strikes and shrinks You're just a kid Keep the thunder hid You're just a kid Keep it under the lid But if you wanna see a waterfall If you wanna see a waterfall You've got to leave the city

White Spirit 05:50
Tell me, Bruno What did you feel Was it breath on your neck Or the wind on your heels It's a lonely lot From apartment to dump And a quiet night For things to go bump Tell me, Bruno What did you see Did a ghost move the swing Or was it the breeze Did the brand of the priest Burn you or heal And was the white spirit Imagined or real Tell me, Bruno What did you hear Did the fears of your fathers Tickle your ears Maybe you and Tito Will leave this behind And some dream will echo And bring it to mind Tell me, Bruno Who will you be The son of the fear Or the son who is free And will you slip the cross Or find in it peace Or wear it around Like it's a disease Did the brand of the priest Burn you or heal And was the white spirit Imagined or real Tell me, Bruno What did you hear Did the fears of your fathers Tickle your ears

I want faith like a feast To eat and drink in the face of the beast I want hope like a song To move in the wind when the road is long I want love like a flame That lights and warms and plays its game I want faith like a feast To eat and drink in the face of the beast I want hope like a song To move in the wind when the road is long I want love like a flame That lights and warms and plays its game I want to wear it like a belt I want to write it so it’s felt I want to hold it to the wind And draw it in, draw it in I want love like a banner Over me, over me, over me, over me --

about

Neighborhood is a collaboration of scattered family searching for a sense of place. Eric Lawrence North tells stories of place, hope, and relationship in electronic, lyrically-driven songs.

For "Neighborhood," Eric collaborated with Storyboard (storyboardproject.org), a work to love neighbors by knowing their stories in Atlanta's "International Village."

Using recorded interviews and lyrics by Eric's brother, Ian North, "Neighborhood" explores generations, tensions, and a deep-seated desire for love in a community under economic, racial, and spiritual pressure.
